I was thinking that it looks about 400-500$ less to fly into Spain. Why, if anyone knows? So we were considering getting our car in Spain, dropping it at Fiumincino. What's amazing in between, and is there anywhere that won't kill me when it comes to staying overnite near Nice or Monaco, B n B preferred.
Daniela, You might save money flying to Barcelona, but have you figured your cost of renting the car, fuel, tolls, and most importantly how much the large penalty fee is to rent in one country and return to another? That can be hundreds of euros without factoring in the added expenses. I think you are looking at false savings. If you really are trying to make a nice trip and not just to save money, I would take the train from Barcelona to Perpignan, France. Pick up a car there and drive to wherever you want to go in France. Drop the car in France and get to Italy using public transportation. You can rent another car in Italy. If I was planning a trip to Italy, personally I wouldn't use up so much time for places I don't care about, especially since it won't save money.
Airfares are a puzzle that only airline people understand, if indeed they do. A couple of years ago we saved a lot of money by flying RT Barcelona instead of using Marseille or Nice for our trip to the South of France. If you have the time, the drive from Perpignan to Nice is filled with beautiful and historic places. But it isn't an area to rush through. You could check out the Michelin Green Guides to see what interests you. Use the hotel reviews on Trip Advisor to find good places to stay.
I think the big difference is that her destination is not the south of France, it is Rome. That is a heck of a drive to not really save money. Saving the $400-$500 seems to be the only motivation for flying to Barcelona.
yes, i looked at the prices for the car, and leaving it another country does jack the price up considerably. We wanted to just enjoy the drive for a couple of days, not really looking for any sites in particular. Thinking now the ferry would be good, see Barcelona for a day, and then hop over. Any thoughts on the 19 hour ferry ie. seat/cabin suggestions?
Have you looked into flying from Barcelona to Rome on a low cost European airline? If you buy the tickets far enough in advance it can be really inexpensive, and much faster than the ferry!
i found a flight on skyscanner (thanks for the tip) for only 1200 into Fiumincino. And it laysover in Finland!! I've never been there!
Have you tried Veuling? I know you might like the drive from Barccelona to Rome. But it does seem as if you are worried about expenses. Are you sure you want to only spend one day in Barcelona? So many things to see, not sure you could do it justice for just one day.
