We are thinking of renting a car and driving from Barcelona to Avignon. We will depart Barcelona on Friday and have to be back for flight out of Barcelona on Tuesday am. Would we be able to travel farther in 4 days? Any suggested itineraries would be appreciated

That's a pretty long drive in itself-around 4 hours one-way and that's on the motorways.
I would suggest you take a look at Girona, Carcasonne, Albi, and Coullier for a leisurely wander around Catalonia and the South of France instead unless there is something specific you are seeking in Avignon.
Or, check out Nimes, Les Bauex(sp?) the Pont du Gard,Chateau Neuf Du Pape and Carpentras if you are seeking Provence.

Sorry for the confusion. We can leave for Avignon area on Friday 6/18 from Barcelona and don't have to be back in Barcelona until Monday 6/21 evening. We will be able to spend 3 nights (fri 6/18, sat 6/19, & sun 6/20) in the area and have to be back Monday night in barcelona for flight out. Any suggestions on where to spend each of 3 nights? We would like to take scenic drives etc.

I'd recommend staying in one place for the 3 nights and taking day trips from there. I've statyed in L'Isle sur la Sorgue twice and have loved it. They had an incredible market on Sundays. Also, ask at the TI about the Lavender Roads. They have a map of different routes you can take to see the lavender in bloom. It's really beautiful.
