I would imagine it to be problem-free. There was only a problem (as far as i know, double check when you rent of course) back in the Eastern Bloc days and the couple years just after, back in the early 90's.

Use the toll free phone number to talk with an agent in the auto rental agency. Most will not allow certain models of cars to be driven into CR.

Be sure to reserve a car which can be taken into CR. I have done that twice so I know Sixt.com, the German agency has cars they allow to be taken in. No visa or paperwork needed.

Two or three years ago we rented a car from Hertz at the Frankfurt airport and drove to both Prague and around Hungary. Returned car somewhere in Germany (Munich I think). When making our rental reservation we were VERY CLEAR where we were going. As a result they made sure that they had a car available that they allowed in those countries. I suspect there is still a bit of a theft problem going on. Never had any problems or hassles of any type. I think you still need a special sticker to drive in the C.R. (Available immediatly upon crossing the border.)

Thanks, I know they have a Sixt office in Sydney Australia so I might look into that one.
