Driving Barcelona to Granada

Hello all,

My husband and I have been laboring over our 2 week itinerary to Spain for next month (end of March), and our latest version of the trip (I think we're on Version 42 by now) has us renting a car to leisurely drive from Barcelona along the coast to Valencia and then on to Granada. We plan to take at least 2 days for this drive so we can poke our heads into any town that piques our interest along the way.

My question is two-fold: has anyone done this drive and if so, do you have any suggestions of places we should keep our eye out for along the way (including possible towns in which to sleep)?

Thanks a bunch!

Hi, Angela
What, only version 42 so far? We did this route on Harleys summer before last, but going the other direction, from Granada to Barcelona. We took two days and the trip on the motorways was uneventful-about like driving the freeways here (note: the autovias are free and the autopistas are toll roads). The terrain reminded us of Southern California. If you can take an extra day and get off the motorway and on the secondary roads you will see a lot more. We stayed one night in Denia, an absolutely charming little town right on the coast about 80km south of Valencia-it even has its own castle right in the middle of town which overlooks a nice sandy beach (there's a castle on nearly every hilltop in Spain). Granada's Alhambra is magnificent and Cordoba is well worth a day if you can swing it, but my personal favorite is Sevilla; see it if you have the time (it's worth two or three days). Rick's Spain guidebook has a lot of good information; if you have any specific questions email me and I'll try to answer them. You'll love Spain. Happy travels.

That is just darn good intel, Ash - Thank you!! As of the current itinerary version, we have planned to go to Granada for a 2 night stop, then on to the White Hill Towns and bum around there for a few days, then on to Sevilla, Cordoba, and Madrid. You are right - Rick's guidebook (working the 2009 edition) has a lot of handy information for those stops, he just leaves out the entire east coast of the country.

And that is where great info like the kind you provided is invaluable! Thank you again!

(PS I'm happy to say we'll be doing the drive with our behinds seated comfortably in the front seats of a car. That drive on a Harley? Yowza!)
