Hi, My family of 4 has a week in mid-May to drive from Vienna to Avignon, Provence. We'd love advice on what towns to aim for, etc. We don't mind fitting a few in because we get to rest in Avignon for 2 weeks afterwards. The only town we've chosen is Salzburg. We've never been in this section of Europe although we have driven through Germany and NE France and loved the driving. thanks
We've been in Switzerland many times with railpasses. My wife took grandsons (ages 11 and 15) and they LOVED the castles: Chateau Chillon, Spiez, Thun. Beautiful Spiez is a great base for Lake Thun area as well as the Alpine thrills of Murren and the Schilthorn. Lake Geneva area also has much to offer, and a handy little place to stay is the village of Villeneuve, or Vevey. The larger cities are "busier" and pricier. Be warned, though, Switzerland is an expensive country for the tourist -- i.e. restaurants and hotels. But it is MAGICAL!
Best wishes for a great trip.
