Driving A10 from Nice to Italy

My husband and I are contemplating driving from Nice to points in Italy (ultimately Sienna) in mid-June.

Is A10 a major highway?

I had a bit of a fright when we chose to drive the Amalfi Coast to Positano a few years back -what with the two lanes, s-curves, and scooters...is A10 less of a hair-raising ride- how many lanes?

I'm up for a pleasant ride- not a thrill-seeker!
Can anyone share info?

Thanks!

You're talking about a divided, 4-lane freeway with limited access and smooth curves. Not the 2-lane, hairpin curves of the Amalfi Road.

It's very easy to drive. Just not as scenic because it's a series of tunnels almost the whole way.

It's manageable, however beware of peak hours and days. There can be horrible lines stretching for tenths of kilometers especially on the Italian coast.

When traffic gets worst, there is always a Porsche or 2 who can't resist and zip very very fast hoping other cars will get out of their ways...

You will pay a steep surcharge for picking up a rental car in one country and dropping it off in another. You may find it cheaper to take the train from Nice to Genoa and pick up a car there.

Mid-June is a good time of the year for the French Riviera, the road is easy but I'd say as anywhere in France, be careful with trucks overtaking other trucks and, yes, avoid peak hours!

Hi Beth -

I've driven that road a number of times and DO NOT recommend it at all. It's a 4-lane divided highway filled with a long, long series of bridges and tunnels that completely spoil the views and make for stressful driving, as the shoulders are narrow in many places. Also, the traffic around Genoa is notoriously bad.

If you can take the train - that's the way I'd go.
