Driving a car in Portugal and Spain, is it a good idea?

RS in his book has set up an itinerary of 3 weeks to see Spain and Portugal by car. That seemed like a good idea especial once we got to Lisbon we could rent a car and see southern Portugal and Spain. However, he doe not advise to drive in Seville, Toledo and Granada. What do you do with the car then? I was going to get rid of the car in Madrid as my wife has to fly home early(after 10 days) and I would go on to Barcalona by train.

We drove in Portugal and Spain and in those
cities. Seville was o.k. and also Granada.
It was tricky in Toledo because the streets are
so narrow. Once you park your car you won't be
using it again until you leave.
In Portugal along the Algarve there are a lot
of accidents so you just have to be careful.
We always travel off season and that makes the
driving a little easier. We also leave the big
cities early in the a.m. to beat the morning
\ traffic.
