I will be in Sarlat in later August. We will be traveling by car and flying onto Munich - we could drive to either Paris of Lyon - I am trying to figure out which is the more interesting drive for a long day trip as airfare is about the same from Lyon or from Paris (we will be visiting Paris later in trip, so drive alone is point right now).
We have just returned from a drive through that area. There aren't many big sights between Sarlot and Paris or Lyon, with one big exception especially if you just need a one night stop-over. Try to spend the night in Chartres. From now until mid-Sept you can see Chartres en luminarie. Over 20 buildings, including the cathedral, host an truly amazing light show every night. It is much more than colored uplighting. The lighting appears as tapestries with a variety of forms set to music. It makes for a beautiful evening stroll.
Loire Valley (castles)is along to Paris as is Fontainbleau, Versailles. I vote toward Paris. However on a map it looks longer than to Lyon. double check on www.michelin.com for kms and time est.
Rene: thanks for the tip - I hear that many cities do light shows now.
What did you think of Sarlat?
JS - the maps can be deceiving, even here in States - how reliable have people found the "drive times" sites to be and which were more reliable?
