I will be in Sarlat in later August. We will be traveling by car and flying onto Munich - we could drive to either Paris of Lyon - I am trying to figure out which is the more interesting drive for a long day trip as airfare is about the same from Lyon or from Paris (we will be visiting Paris later in trip, so drive alone is point right now).
From Sarlat to the airports, there's about an hour's difference, with Paris CDG being the most distant. If it's Paris Orly, it's real close to the same. If it's late in the day, the drive around Paris to CDG can add even more time.
The Sarlat - Paris scenery is boring, it's more interesting as you get closer to Lyon.
The only reason I can think of to go to Paris is if you're going to slip into Chartres to see the cathedral.
Thanks for the response - that was my inclination already that Lyon would be better drive - see more of France, etc.
Any tips for stops along the way from Sarlat to Lyon?
Two ideas, neither too far out of the way.
1 -- Oradour sur Glane (15 mi nw of Limoges) is a city flattened by germans in WWII and remains so as a memorial. An hour stop is fine.
2 -- Grotte de Pech Merle (near small town of Chamberet, 40 mi ne of Brive) has undoubtedly the best cave paintings in France. Tour takes about an hour, don't recall frequency/wait time.
My pick would be the caves.
