Dress code at Opera Garnier

During our upcoming trip to France (Paris - Normandy - Mont St. Michel - Loire Valley) my 18 yr old daughter and I are planning on attending the ballet at the Opera Garnier one night, I've already purchased the tix online. I'm wondering what the dress code is? Is it formal/semi-formal? Or just dressy or even casual? Has anyone attended a show here before?

I haven't been to the Opera Garnier, unfortunately, but I've attended several other operas and ballets in Europe - La Scalla, London. During the winter and early spring - before most of the tourists arrive, the dress code seems to be fairly dressy/semi formal, but during tourist season anything goes. I have seen everything from dirty jeans to tuxes at each of the late spring/summer operas and ballets I have attended. I have a silk pant suit that I dress up with a scarf or pashmina, which is quite presentable. Enjoy!

I've never specifically been to the Opera Garnier, but I've been to many classical concernts throughout the continent. At the "regular season" classical music events in Europe (versus the Mozart and Vivaldi for tourists in the summer), you will see everything from formal wear to a few students in jeans and T-shirts. While there is no formal dress code, the majority of people tend to go more dressy than casual. Personally, I usually don't wear a suit, but I do wear a dress shirt and tie.

My wife and I just went to the Opera Garnier around the new year. There was a real mix of how people were dressed. Some were dressed to the nines and others less formal, but dressed nice. Very few were casual. My wife wore black slacks and a sweater and did not feel out of place. It was one of the hightlights of our trip. The building is very cool. You can see pictures at our blog at:
