Dresden or Meissen

We'll be going from Berlin to Prague -- and planned to spend a couple of days in SE Germany. I am traveling with my husband, daughter (10) and son (14). Would you recommend staying in Dresden or Meissen? Or, somewhere else? I'm looking for a pension or gasthaus with a family room -- something not too pricey. Open for ANY great recommendations.

It's been a few years ago, but we loved Mezcalero B&B in Dresden - very reasonable (www.mezcalero.de). They had some larger rooms/apartments.

Dresden and Meissen have two distinctively different "feels". The one is a revitalized city and the other, a small town. Two years ago we stayed in Dresden and visited Meissen. If I were doing it again I would stay in Meissen and visit Dresden. We did not like our accommodations in Dresden so I am no help with specifics.

Lois -- You've hit upon the crux of my problem. We'll visit both -- but where to stay. I'd been thinking Dresden, but then had several people talk about how charming they found Meissen. We are planning to have a car at that point in the trip.

Kelly,

On past trips I made it a day trip visiting Dresden from Berlin since it's a bit over 2 hrs. But last summer I stayed in Dresden itself at the DJH hostel on Maternisstrasse for 2 nights, got my own room with the facilities included...great. Dinner buffet there was under 6 Euro...very good. The hostel is about a 10-15 walk from the train station. You can also get a family room at the hostel with the facilities, saw German families with children there.

Can't help you on Meissen, haven't been there as yet.
Dresden is almost equal distant from both Prague and Berlin, at least by train.
