My reservation at the Hotel Klosterhof Dresden for the night of December 14, 2011, has been cancelled by the Hotel because of a fire which has forced them to close. They are suggesting the following hotels: Azimut Dresden (trip advisor reviews are not encouraging); Leubnitzer Hohe (only one review I could find); Hotel Prinz Eugen; Landhotel Dresden; and AVIV. Does anyone know anything about these hotels? Location to center city, quiet, etc.? We will have a car but would like to be able to get to center city. Thank you.
I've never been to Dresden, but I read most of the reviews on Azimut and I didn't see much wrong. But, of course, I don't put much stock in TripAdvisor reviews to start with - no accuracy checking. Unless you know the person who actually posted the review, you don't know much. No air conditioning - in December! It's a little ways out of town, but near the streetcar. To me, €79 w/ breakfast looks pretty good.
Joanne doesn't know any of us either, so what is the difference in a review from one of us and a review on Trip Advisor? You can also go to the forums on Trip Advisor and ask your question. The Destination Experts for Dresden can give you a fairly qualified answer. I would also use www.hrs.com to look up some hotels, as there you can map out their location, see what the amenities are, etc. and then contact the hotels themselves to check the rates.
I also can't say that I find Trip Advisor inferior to this board. The good thing about Trip Advisor is that you can read ten recent reviews, which allows you to "detect" fakes and oddballs. Perhaps people who don't read their technology manuals (well, sometimes I don't) also won't take the time to read ten reviews. But I've never gotten a bum steer there. We stayed at the Hilton Dresden, which may be out of your budget. But this great location hotel is frequently discounted. Check on it. Interesting comment not applicable to a December stay: Even at a luxury hotel, the air conditioning could barely keep up with a fierce heat wave. We dropped our car off after unloading here, so we didn't have to park. Give serious consideration to staying in Dresden Neustadt. Despite the inferior architecture, it's a happening place, and the U-Bahn is very good. I'm sorry we only got to see the new Military Museum under construction (Daniel Liebeskind). This is important for architectural and museum-politics reasons, even if you're not interested in Military history.
I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Stauffenbergallee. It's a ways from the center of the city, but it is very close (about a 5 minute walk) to a tram that takes you directly there. PM me with any questions!
Thank you all for your suggestions. We obtained access to the internet and booked a night at ApartHotel Dresden for about $180. The location was wonderful (right next to Frauenkirche), parking available on-site for an extra $25, and the accommodations were good. The only problem (and this was a significant one for me) was that the elevator was broken and we had to walk up 6 flights of stairs to the unit (parking was two flights below ground plus 4 flights to our unit). The staff helped carry luggage, but there was no option to move to a ground floor unit, and they seemed indifferent to the fact that this was a serious problem for a person with physical limitations. The elevator was fixed briefly but broke down again almost immediately. This problem significantly diminished our experience in Dresden. As a result, if you have any sort of mobility limitations, I would not recommend this hotel.
