Is it possible to get around Dordogne without a car? I want to add a 2 day stop when traveling from Venice to Paris that captures French countryside, maybe a castle, cute village, etc. Burgundy is obviously an easier stop along the way but seems less interesting to me....Any thoughts or ideas....is renting a car easy to do in France if you don't speak the language? Also, is there expensive deposits, more trouble than just finding alternate city like Lyon?
You need a car to see the Dordogne. It is also in a completely different part of France than the route from Italy to Paris. Burgundy would be a better stop.
Burgundy has everything you listed: castle, beautiful countryside, cute villages as well as chateau, wine, great food, etc. Renting a car is no more trouble than renting in US, you need a cc and drivers lic, but expect manual transmission. Language not a problem.
You need more time, not less, to sightsee in the Dordogne without a car, so with only two days I would choose Burgundy or Provence instead. Similarly, the Dordogne is harder to get to and harder to get from (to Paris), which must figure into your logistical calculus somehow. Generally commerce across the language barrier is pretty easy on the principle that they want to sell what you want to buy. For a car though you will pay more, generally, for a last-minute rental. Another option for getting out into the countryside, if you are game, is a bicycle.
