without a car and hoping to base in sarlat. How realistic is seeing the region well without a car? what are the options? Better to base in Beynac? thanks

I was a train traveller in June 2009. I stayed 3 nights in Sarlat (Toulemon Rooms!). On my first full day, I day-tripped to Grotte de Font de Gaume, Maison Fort de Rouffignac, and Lascaux II via Rick's recommended Allo-Philippe taxi (reserved in advance). The next day, I spent a nice half-day (6 total hours) canoeing and sight-seeing the Dordogne River (pick-up and drop-off in Sarlat included with Canoe Copeyre, also reserved in advance), including stops in La Roque-Gageac and Beynac. The canoeing was my favorite. Would a car be better in the region? Probably, but I don't know how to drive a stick, I'm a nervous driver even in the US, and I was a solo traveller. I saw most of what I wanted to see. Sarlat had a great market day while I was there, a grocery store, several restaurants, and a train station, so it was more up my alley than sleepy Beynac. Have a great time!
Without a car, better to base in Sarlat, I'd say. More to do in town, and it is served by the SNCF bus. I'd also say, a car is really worth it in this region.
