We have just returned from this region and want to report on a couple of places that we stayed at that are worth a look for anyone travelling to these two areas. Rick covers the Dordogne area fairly well in his book, but other than Albi and Carcassonne, Languedoc is worth a look outside of these two cities. We stayed at two wonderful places not listed in his book: 1. Dordogne: Le Chevrefeuille - about a 10 minute drive north of St. Cyprien. It is a B&B/Gite perfectly situated to easily drive to all of the region's major sites. 10 minutes to Les Eyzies, 20 km to Sarlat and about the same to Beynac. We stayed in one of the gites which was converted from a 200 year old barn. Chevrefeuille is located in the countryside, the gites are very clean, comfortable, and well equipped. The owners are very accommodating hosts. Ian is a professional chef and cooks 3 nights of the week using only what is in season from the markets.! Would highly recommend this as a base for the area.
2. Languedoc: Les Marguerites. We found it by chance while checking Trip Advisor reviews and glad we chose Les Marguerites. It is about 35 minutes south of Carcassonne and 9 km south of Limoux in the small medieval town of Alet-les-Bains. Again, amazing hosts. Les Marguerites has been completely renovated with attention to detail. Big spacious rooms, comfy beds, thick towels, wonderful breakfasts, and Antoinette will cook amazing meals any night of the week you want. I could go on and on but will run out of room. Both are run by friendly families and no request was too much trouble. If you are travelling in either of these two areas, we highly recommend both. If anyone has any questions about the areas, please ask.
Thanks, David. I'm considering a trip to Dordogne so I will check this out.
