We have successfully booked rooms in Provence and Alsace and are now trying to find a room in the Dordogne region. Possibly based in La Roque-Gageac, Beynac or Sarlat. We have a car and are interested in chambres d'hotes or small hotel. Any feedback is quite welcome. Thanks for all insight!
I make a practice of not recommending places to stay. And I'm not particularly fond of Sarlat, except for one thing: Toulemon. Stick 'gite' in front of it and it should pop up - - he changes the name around or something. P-H is a great guy with a great wife. It's the only place we go out of our way to stay.
I would also recommend NOT staying in Sarlat. La Tour de Cause b&b, near Castlenaud (very close to Beynac and La Roque) is one of my favorite places I've ever stayed in Europe.
We stayed at Le Relais du Pech just a short distance from Sarlat, but in the countryside. A very nice B&B owned by Ken and Linda a retired English couple. The rooms are comfortable, clean and all have ensuite facitlities. There also is a kitchen for your use. I highly recommend them. Linda was a wealth of information about things to see in the area. http://www.lerelaisdupech.com/indexgb.html Here is a link the entry in my blog about our stay in the Dordogne. http://tinyurl.com/4fbsmy3
I can highly recommend Le Chèvrefeuille B&B (English spoken as well), in Pechboutier, between St Cyprien and Les Eyzies:

We liked B&B Les Hautes Granges located about five miles from Sarlat in the direction of Soullinac. It is surrounded by gardens, has a pool, and room was nice with beamed ceiling, antique furnishings, and large comfortable bed. Great location for seeing all the wonderful sights of the Dordogne-caves, castles, gardens, etc.
Thanks everyone! Checking them all out. I really appreciate the "insider" knowledge that's shared.
Peg,
In 2008 we stayed at the Le Petit Versailles in Beynac. Wonderful place and charming owners. They do a good homecooked dinner. Breakfast is included. A few years earlier we stayed at the Hotel de l'Esplanade in Domme.. a little more expensive but wonderful stay. Do a canoe trip if you have time. You'll love the Dordogne!
I second the recommendation for Petit Versailles in Beynac. The view from the green room is especially good. Great acoomodations and breakfast.
Not to pile on, but we had five great nights last year at Le Petit Versailles in Beynac. Very friendly couple, great breakfasts, beautiful hillside location overlooking the valley just east of "downtown" Beynac, a short walk to several good restaurants. I agree with Christy about staying in Sarlat, too much traffic -- though a visit there on market day is great. Like Beynac, Domme or Castelnaud would be a good base for exploring the area. La Roque-Gageac is pretty and fun to visit, but so squeezed against the road that you're always watching for cars. I was glad we didn't spend nights there.
The last time we visited the Dordogne, we stayed right IN Sarlat. We wanted to be able to wander around in the evenings, and to eat some meals in town and not have to worry about driving afterwards. We also had our son with us, and thought he'd like the ability to wander around on his own a bit in the town. We stayed at Les Chambres du Glacier. It's located above the cafe of the same name, right on the main plaza. It was a bit noisy on market day, but other than that, the noise level was fine. The owners of the chambres d'hote and the cafe, M. and Mme Costa, have four very large rooms (even two sinks in our bathroom), very clean and well-kept. The Costas, especially M. Costa, were very pleasant. Breakfast was at their cafe; when we were there, it was nice enough to have breakfast outside. The caveat is that driving in and out of Sarlat can be a pain, and the chambres does not have its own parking. We were there in late May, and were always able to easily find a (free) parking spot about 2 blocks from our rooms, which I would guess wouldn't be so easy during the middle of the tourist season. Driving in and out of Sarlat was somewhat of a pain, but not because of the car traffic - the off season (just like where we live in the U.S.) is the time of year for road construction, so we had to drive through that.
We stayed at Hotel le Perigord near La Roque-Gageac and loved it. The owners were very nice and the food in the restuarant was wonderful! The rooms were a decent size and the bathroom was large. Our room looked up to the bluff and the town of Domme. It was neat to see the lights at night. It was so peaceful. There was a little laundry in the town on the road up to Domme. The laundry was done by the owners and the rates were reasonable. I would go back to the hotel in a nanosecond!
Last summer we stayed at Les Filolies (5 miles from Sarlat in St. Andre d'Allas). Quiet, close to Sarlat, pleasant. We enjoyed it, and I would stay there again. I have never posted anything anywhere before, so I don't know if I can post their link, but it's easy enough to find online.
Hi Dave, Welcome! Posting links is fine. I have Les Filolies bookmarked, as I had seriously considered it:

Thanks so much for all of the wonderful ideas and shared knowledge. After much research and requests, we have found a room at the La Maison Notaire Royal in Sarlat...one of the only ones with availabilities at this time. So, now I am searching for hotels in Paris! Our last stop before heading home. If anyone has any experiences good/bad for stays in Paris, please send them on to me. Your help is greatly appreciated! Peg
Re Paris hotels -- A few years ago we stayed at the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles on rue Cardinal Lemoine in the Latin Quarter (5th arrondissement) for 12 nights. Nice room overlooking a beautiful courtyard, short walk to two metro stops and to Place Contrescarpe and rue Mouffetard market. We didn't try their breakfast but had great ones at a little cafe up the street. Their website is www.hotel-grandes-ecoles.com. I've also heard good reports on the Hotel St-Jacques nearby, a larger place on a busier street, a little closer to the Seine.
