Since the trip is a bequest from our mom, and she was a Sound of Music fan, we are doing the (maybe touristy) Sound of music tour. My sisters want to stay at Villa Trapp. I am doing the arrangements for the trip. Any experiences you'd card to share?
I took the Sound of Music tour from Bob's Special Tours that Rick Steves recommends. I really enjoyed it. Sure, it's a bit hokey, but it was a small van (other tours are big busses) and we only had 7 of us on the tour. Our guide differentiated between myth and reality pretty well. One of the things that we learned was that two houses were used for the exterior shots of von Trapp home. The one that you've linked to here is what was used for the front entrance. Also, the yellow wall was used in the scene where Maria is going to the von Trapp's for the first time. The other house was used for the lake side locations. Here's a link to the second house. The tour took us out to the church where the wedding was filmed. We didn't see actual meadows as are in the film, but saw similar locations. The meadows where the filming took place are around 30 miles away. We did get to ride the luge which I highly recommend! Have fun with it. Pam
Besides Bob's, Panorama tours does a SOM tour. We did Panorama's in November, and it's quite similar to Bob's. Have dinner at the Goldene Ente, a small place in the heart of older Salzburg, make reservations, it's tiny!
