Documentation Center - Nuremberg and/or Berchtesgaden?

Hi, We're going to Germany/Austria in November and will be taking a day trip to Nuremberg from Munich to see the Rally Grounds and Documentation Center. We will also be going to Berchtesgaden as a day trip out of Salzburg to see the town and Konigssee. If we go to the Documentation Center in Nuremberg, would also going to the one in Berchtesgaden be redundant, given the fact that we've been to the one in Nuremeberg? Or is it still worthwhile to see? Thank you!

Dawn, I don't believe it would be "redundant" to visit the Dokumentation Centre in Berchtesgaden, as I suspect the focus is slightly different than the one in Nuremberg. With the Dokumentation Centre in Berchtesgaden, note that all the displays are in German but they do have English language Audio Guides. One interesting aspect of that location is that there's an extensive network of Bunkers built into the mountain behind the Centre. Some of them have been renovated and are open for visitors. Unfortunately, the elevator down to Hitler's private quarters is "in ruins" so it's not possible to see that part of the complex. While in Berchtesgaden, you could also take a Salt Mine tour and possibly visit the Eagle's Nest. However, that's very subject to weather and if they've had snow by then, the road will be closed so the Eagle's Nest won't be a possibility. The town itself is very nice, so you might enjoy wandering around there for awhile also. Happy travels!

The Berchtesgaden Dokumentation Center is at the base Kehlstein (in Obersalzberg), just a few minutes walk from the Busabfahrt (parking lot from which the buses go up the private, bus only road to the Eagles Nest). The museum documents how the Nazis rose to power. I really thought the Center was worth while, although after 10 years the main thing I remember is the radios they gave out free, which were set to receive only the Nazi propaganda channel. At the Berchtesgaden Dok Center, you can also tour what's left of the bunkers that used to connect the SS center there to the vacation homes of all the top Nazis (you can't see that in Nürnberg). I went up to the Eagles' Nest first thing in the morning, hiked to the cross at the top of the mountain, then had lunch in the building. I came down in early afternoon and spent the rest of the day in the Dok Center. Unless you skip the Dok Center, or don't stay very long, you won't have time for Königssee. The last boat on the lake leaves the Seelände at 17:15, but if you go to the end of the lake at Salet you can't get off there because it is also the last boat back. It you take the 16:45 boat, you'll have only 30 min to hike to the Obersee.

Thank you all for the replies! Since we will be in Berchtesgaden in November, it's my undertanding that the Eagle's Nest will be closed, so that's why we thought we'd have time to tour the town, visit the Documentation Center and go to Konigssee before catching the bus back to Salzburg.

The seasonal closing of the Eagles Nest is on October 21, unless it has to close earlier because of snow. The last bus leaves for Salzburg at 18:15 on workdays, 19:15 on Sat, Sun, and holidays. If you are going to stay later, the train runs until almost midnight.
