We will have a car in Provence but will drop it off and grab a train to Barcelona. I am seeing that Avignon and Marseille connect in Montpelier to get there for the 4 - 5 hour train ride. Is there any other connection in the area or a little closer that we might consider dropping our car off or is Montpelier the best place for the drop off? Trains leave at either 7:30 am or 3 p.m. I would love to find something in between. I appreciate any advice here.

You could drop your car in Perpignan. Direct trains from there to Barcelona depart at 08:56 and 16:54. Regional trains requiring a connection in Port Bou depart at 12:30, 13:46, 15:40, 17:53 and 19:13.
See the timetables at www.bahn.de. Click on the drop-down flag menu for English. After you get summary timetables for Perpignan-Barcelona, click on the arrow to the left of each departure time to see the connecting points.

Thanks Tim. Still not sure what we are going to do, but thinking we might be able to get over to Carcassonne for a couple of hours to check it out as we heard it was a great place to visit, and then down to Perpignan to drop the car and get the train. Long, crazy day, but probably worth it!

Carcassonne will definitely be worth it. You'll be sorry you don't have more time there.
