My son will be in Amsterdam a day ahead of the rest of us and I thought it might save us some time if he could buy museumkaarts for all of us. Do you have to buy them in person or could he just go pick up 4 of them?

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe each person has to purchase the card separately because a form has to be filled out for each card.
The I'amsterdam card, on the other hand, can be purchased together in advance.

It can be purchased online, but it looks like they only ship it within the Netherlands. The website museumkaart.nl is in Dutch only, but perhaps you can try sending an email to customer service: klantenservice museumkaart.nl I'm sure they will understand English.
