Do we tip on the Overlord tour of D-Day beaches?

We are planning a full day D-Day tour with Overlord Tours in Normandy and I was wondering if it is appropriate/expected to tip our guide at the end of the tour?

Dawn, I've taken a couple of all-day tours in Normandy (although not from Overlord), and on those tours there was never any suggestion or hint from the Guides that a tip was expected. However, they provided such awesome tours, I felt that a tip was appropriate in each case, and I gladly offered one. As I recall, I felt that a gratuity of €10 for each tour was suitable. Happy travels!

Professional, high quality tours will never suggest a tip, that is considered to be kind of tacky. Tips would be welcome though, and if you enjoyed the tour, felt the guide did an excellent job, then do go ahead and tip. The amount depends on how much the tour cost, how many people, is it a private tour or a group tour? If you booked a private, all day tour then a 10 euro tip is a bit low. If it is a group tour that you are joining, then 10-15 euro is probably ok. Anything in the 10% range will usually be a good tip. If it was a big bus tour, then a couple of euro is plenty.

@Jo, Just to clarify, my tours were in a small van with about 6 people. They weren't a "private tour". The amount that I offered for the tip may have been €10 or it may have been a bit more. I'd have to check my records. Cheers!

@ Ken, your tip was a perfect amount. I had meant private as in, just you and the guide and no one else.

Thanks Ken and Jo! This is exactly the information I was looking for.

My daughter and I did a half-day with Overlord. Tips were not expected, but Sean had done such a great job, I did tip. I believe it was 10 or 20 euro (can't recall now!).

@Jo, No worries..... I just wanted to add a bit of clarification on the type of tours I took, and that I wasn't entirely sure on the amount I tipped. I diarize my trips, so I've probably got the information listed somewhere. Cheers!

My husband, son, and I did an all day Overlord tour in October of 2012....we gave them 15 Euro each for a tip. Another traveler on the same tour, from Amsterdam, thought it was high, but we thought it was appropriate.
