Do we do Champagne tour in Paris on our own via train, or with guided tour?

We are debating doing a guided tour to the Champagne region, they vary from 130-170 euro each, or doing one on our own, which seems like the cost would be about 50 euro each. Any recommendations on either? We want to go more for the experience and scenery than actually learning all about champagne.

Agree with Ralph (gasp). A little extra legwork and research on your own will save you a lot of money here, and if you don't really care about learning about champagne you've just given yourself the reason to not take an expensive tour.

Do it yourself! My mother and I did a day trip to Reims ourselves. We did the Mumm tour and also had book the cheaper tour at the smaller house mentioned in Rick Steves book (the name escapes me) - because we wanted an English tour, they had scheduled us to be with a group tour that was running late. They rescheduled us for a different tour at their sister house Charles de Cazaone right by the train station. The bus group was not able to reschedule and because time was tight they only got to do a little tasting, while my mom and I had a great, full length tour with a tiny group of people. Also we got to explore the town on our own in between the tours.

I agree about going to Reims on your own. I highly suggest making sure you get a map of the city before leaving the train station. It is very helpful to note the location of everything before walking into town from the train station.

You can definitely do it on your own and the guides at the champagne house(s) will explain about the history of champagne, how it's made, etc, so you don't need the tour from Paris for that. DO plan ahead though. For many of the houses, you need to reserve a spot. But not all! But take a look at some of the major ones, figure out which one(s) you'd like to see, andbe sure about the schedule/location. You have plenty of time since you're planning now!

Thanks for the great responses everyone! We will do it on our own, I won't be able to plan ahead too much, as we are going tomorrow, but will try abit, and leave a bit to good travel luck. Thanks again!

Don't miss the Armistice Museum on the other side the tracks. It is the maproom, set up as it was the night that Germany surrendered. The cathedrals are interesting, too. We did all that, and had a tour of Taittinger, all in one day. And had lunch!
