do train tickets in Austria ever go on sale?

We are renting a car in Germany and are dropping it in Salzburg. There is no drop-off allowed in Vienna. (We have booked through Autoeurope). We are forced to take the train to Vienna which will cost the 2 of us about 93 euros. Is there a cheaper way to book a train ticket? Or a way to drop a car in Vienna?! Thanks for your help.

OBB, the Austrian national rail service, shows something called "1-PLUS-Freizeit-Ticket für die 2.Klasse" at 45 Euro, which may be a discount for 2. I would suggest trying their 24 hour help line at 011-43-5-1717 to see what's available.

If you are willing to take only regional trains, making your trip from Salzburg to Vienna much longer, buy an Einfach-Raus-Ticket in Salzburg. The cost is 28€ and it is good for 2-5 people traveling together. See here: http://tinyurl.com/34rfm4.

For timetables go to www.bahn.de. Click on the drop-down window next to "Means of transport" and choose "Only local transport." After you get summary timetables, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points.

Yes - for cheaper train tickets, don't know about Vienna drop for car. We recently purchased train tickets for two on OBB website. There is was a discount for two people, about 56 euro. It's all in German, but pretty easy to figure out (especially with a little cut and paste help from www.freetranslation.com).

I checked out the website and saw the 2 for 1 tickets. Do I need to book this far in advance? Thanks for the info. Pat
