Does anyone know where I can purchase a dirndl either in the USA or in germany without dropping a fortune? I am going to Oktoberfest in Munich and I think it would be fun to wear one.

Would a link to C & A help you? Here's their collection of Dirndls and lots of them for under 100 Euro, a great value for good quality (not best quality but certainly more than acceptable). I bought a very traditional silk one 15 years ago in a store specializing in "Trachten" and paid about 300 Euro ... The website also gives you addresses for stores under the menu heading "C & A Filialen" or you order online and let it ship to the place you will be staying in Germany.
