Hello, Could someone please give me directions on how I get from the Gare St Lazare to the Hotel Dieu across from Notre Dame Cathedral? I thought of just taking a taxi, but would really like to know how to get there by other transportation. We are staying in Bayeux for 5 days and then making our way back to Paris for another 4 days. I appreciate your help. Thank-you Sharon
Get to the metro side of St Lazare, hop Metro 14 eastbound. Get off at Chatelet, walk across the bridge and down the square. The walk's about half a mile, maybe a bit less. You could make a change at Chatelet to Metro 4 southbound and get off at Cite which is a block away from Hotel Dieu. The problem is that you'd have to hike almost as far in the gargantuan station and make an elvation change. Getting above ground is faster.
Thank-you very much Ed. I really appreciate your help. Sincerely, Sharon
Since you have several days to enjoy Paris, a good aid for getting around is the regional transport RATP site covering the city's subway, bus, and regional rail services. http://www.ratp.fr/en/ratp/c_5000/accueil/ It has interactive maps to help you plan you jaunts, and advice for tourism. A more general appreciation of the transit systems is on the blog www.Parisbytrain.com
Your hotel will probably have a couple of public computers if you don't carry a personal device to help with your daily schedule. To get your mind travelling before your body hits the road, do a work-out on these sites so you will get some understanding of what's ahead.
Southam has an excellent idea. You really need to get familiar with the system if you're going to use it effectively. But, if you're totally computerless (or forget), those same maps are plastered all over the metro stations and you can do it the old-fashion way and just stare at them for a couple of seconds.
