dinner reservations germany/austria

hi we a we traveling by car the first two weeks in September to Bacharach, Rothenberg, fussen, garmish, kitzbuhel, Salzburg and munich and a few points in between. I have hotels booked and itinerary roughly planned. I do not however have restaurant plans. will I have probems finding some place to eat. we do not need to eat at fancy 5 star places and probably cozy pub types would be more comfortable. with our extensive travel plans it's hard to pinpoint a time for dinner... thanks for your thoughts kathy

In Garmisch, the Fraundorfer Inn has a fun Bavarian Evening with traditional food. I believe I called to request a table in advance. Fraundorfer webpage

Cozy pubs are plentiful in both Austria and Germany, as you can imagine:)) Since you don't have an exact plan (I usually don't either) I will ask advice of locals or hotel owners when I am hungry... or just check out the menus and see how many locals are at the restaurant. I love the food in both countries and have only had a few mediocre meals there in lots of trips. Since you have a car you can also stop at the rest areas in Germany for some decent road food (like goulashe suppe) Also you can always stop at any number of grocery stores for picnic food to keep in your car for a roadside stop.

Yes, sometimes I have gotten very good recommendations from my host for a nearby place to eat, but, for the most part, I enjoy walking around, looking at the menus which are posted outside, until I find just exactly what I want. I find this much easier to do without a car, since I don't have to find a parking place just to look at the menu.

Hi Kathy, You don't need "restaurant plans". We've spent over 80 nights in Germany and Austria on 7 trips over the past 11 years, with a car, and never had trouble finding a good place for dinner. That's with having no "plans" for dinner at all. We've been to every place on your list (except Kitzbuehl) at least once. We've been to Salzburg 5 times! I think you'll have a great trip! Paul

You're headed to towns that make most of their money catering to tourists. You will have NO PROBLEMS finding restaurants.

hi all, thanks for your thoughts and advice. I didn't think there would be a problem eating without reservations but as the trip gets closer I start to worry and second guess :).... I like the idea of walking around and eating where and when it appeals. do eateries post menus in English also. we know very little german. trying to work on a few words and a phrase book to get by :)... thanks for all your thoughts and advice... kathy
