Dinan or St. Malo

Looking for opinions on where to visit for one night this summer. Dinan or St. Malo (or anywhere else close by). We will be driving from the Loire Valley and only staying for one night before heading to Mont St Michel. Thanks!

Have not yet been to Dinan, but the old walled section of St. Malo is a great place to spend a night and visit. Very quaint and scenic. Stop in Cancale on your way and have some great fresh seafood while you watch the oysters being harvested.

My husband and I stayed two nights in Dinan and one night in St. Malo last August. We enjoyed both places. If you like it quieter, with charming medieval architecture and quaint countryside, choose Dinan. If you want a livelier atmosphere and a seaside resort feel, choose St. Malo. FYI, we liked both Dinan and St. Malo better than Mont St. Michel, although we don't regret going there.

One night Dinan, one night St Malo. Stop by MSN for a couple of hours. That's the best way to do it.

We stayed at Le Logis du Jerzual, a B&B in Dinan. It was great -- full of charm and character. Friendly owner and pretty good breakfast. It's on a steep hill, so would not be good for people who are not very mobile.

We stayed in Dinan two nights in June, 2008. On our full day we day-tripped to St. Malo for a few hours, then went late afternoon to MSM. We liked this arrangement--Dinan is a pleasant town but very quiet. It's nice to walk down Rue Jezebel to the river in the evening or early morning, then leave for somewhere livelier during the day. St. Malo is much larger, has way more shopping, and you can walk on the walls and look at the ocean. In Dinan we stayed at Hotel La D'Avaugour and enjoyed two dinners at Canterbory.
