I have a trip planned for June. Versailles was planned for Monday, and I just read in the RS book that most museums including Versailles are closed on Mondays!!!! Can we travel directly from Dijon to Versailles? If so, we can spend a half day.
The quickest route would be by train through Paris. This includes several transfers (to Metro and then RER C) so it is not "direct."
I would not recommend doing Versailles as a half day from Dijon, if that is what is intended. Even if the inside is closed, the gardens and facade are still beautiful, and if I were in Paris would still go. However, if you are coming all the way from Dijon, I would not spend the time.
Two more things: 1. Be aware that the RER C line divides on the west side of Paris. Be sure to get on a train that is going to Versailles-Rive Gauche. 2. If you don't want to walk or take the bus across the Seine to Gare d'Austerlitz, you can take the RER A or the RER D from Gare de Lyon to Chatelet-Les Halles, the RER B to Saint-Michel Notre-Dame, and the RER C to Versailles-Rive Gauche.
Agree with Mike. You really can't do it as an afternoon after coming in from Dijon. The gardens I believe will be open on Monday but the palace closed. It would still be worth it if that is the only time you could go. For most anyway the gardens are the highlight.
We planned to arrive in Paris late morning on a Friday and see the city for 2 1/2 days until Sunday evening, taking a day trip to Versailles on Monday, then leaving for Amsterdam Tuesday morning. Because Versailles is closed Monday, I need to modify the itinerary. Not sure if we should plan Versailles then for Saturday or Sunday, or just skip it? To modify - Friday -Paris 1/2 day - possibly bus tour in afternoon Saturday - Versailles Sunday -all museums (hop on-hop off)
Monday, possibly strolling thru neighborhoods Does this sound reasonable?
There are TGVs from Dijon to Paris (Gare de Lyon) departing at 06:20, 06:53, 08:00, and 09:25. If you take the first one, you could arrive at Versailles-Rive Gauche on the RER C as early as 09:12. If you take the last one, you would arrive at Versailles at 12:12. You would need to either walk or take bus #91 across the Seine to Gare d'Austerlitz where you would catch the RER C to Versailles-Rive Gauche. There are left luggage facilities at the chateau. So you CAN do it. SHOULD you do it? Since your time in Paris will be quite limited, I'd skip Versailles this trip.
I wouldn't skip Versailles if I were you. I love Paris and Versailles, both the gardens and the inside of the palace. It's very worthwhile imo. I'd do it as Tim suggested or on the weekend. You can rent bikes in the garden which makes getting around the massive grounds more time efficient and very fun.
Thank you. It seems unlikely (considering all the transfers that are required between Dijon and Versailles) that we will have time to see Versailles on Friday. I guess we will have to decide if we want to give up a Saturday or Sunday to see Versailles.
