Difficulty with reserving a room at Stahleck Hostel at Bacharach

What is the best way to contact the Stahleck Hostel to reseve a room? The web site listed in the guide book was in Germany only and the on-line booking feature did not work. I sent an e-mail about two days ago and I did not get any response yet. Whenever I called the hostel number, the line was busy. Please help.

Thanks, David

It's a translation error. It means there are no 2 bed rooms available for the requested period. I just did the same request for the night of Jan 13th, 2010 and I got results.

Make sure you really want to stay there. It's about 500 steps straight up the hillside from town, which really discourages coming and going. A more accessible DJH castle-hostel in the area is in Diez on the Lahn River; take the train from Koblenz. It's very classy.

Thanks for the web site in English. But when I inquire about a "2-bedroom" for 2 adults, the response came back with "This number of persons is too big for the room" and asked me to contact the hostel directly to get assitance. Does anyone understand what that means?

This week (on the English version) I had a similar problem when I tried to reserve rooms for my 4 kids at the Stahleck Hostel. I got the same kind of message as you, so I emailed them to clarify. They responded in a few days, explaining that they were fully booked for December 18 and 19. So I booked the kids into a quad in my 2nd Bacharach choice, the castle-like Hotel Kranenturm. From some reviews I have read, my kids may be glad to not have to hike up that hill, especially on cold, dark winter nights.

So is it virtually impossible to get a room there? Cause even though it's quite the trek uphill, it looks amazing.

Desiree,

of course it's not impossible to get a room there. Just remember that it is a very popular castle so early reservations are recommended. And as it is a hostel after all, there are few smaller rooms in addition to larger dorm-style accommodations. They may be a bit more difficult to book at busy times.

The Stahleck advised me in in their polite email reply that they had lots of openings several days later, but just not when I needed them. I'm sure it's very popular with large groups, especially near Christmas, so it was my fault for not booking soon enough.

I think Beatrix is correct: My info is from 2007, at that time this hostel had only 5 DBL rooms that a couple could stay in.

My 2009 Germany guide also says there are only 5 doubles here. I would have taken 2 doubles, if available, or 4 regular hostel beds, but both options were sold out. Apparently the concept of staying in an ultra cheap, enchanting castle is very popular!
