Im staying right near luxembourgh garden and taking a day trip to versaille using the museum pass. So I am just going to buy a round trip ticket to versaille I believe u take the rer C. Since I am near the RER B I am going to use that line to get to RER C, the real question is do I need to buy a separate ticket to get from B to C or will that round trip versaille ticket cover any points to get to Versaille? Hope this makes sense. Leaving in a week and half and thought it would be easier to try to figure out my answer on here in english than try to stumble through it in french. thank you for any help/suggestions!

I have no clue how to get there but we are considering going in December so let us know how it was. We have limited time in Paris and don't want to 'waste' it by traveling to Versailles for the day if we could stay in Paris and experience more.

A single ticket will allow you to transfer to the RER C. The trip covers four transit zones. Just buy the ticket at the station and you can probably do just fine with the ticket machines. And make sure you get off at Versailles Rive Gauche.

The fare each way from any point in central Paris is €2.90. Be aware that the RER C line divides on the west side of Paris. Be sure to get on a train that goes to Versailles-Rive Gauche (all trains with the nameplate VICK).
If you'd rather save your museum pass for other days, on the day you go to Versailles you could buy a Forfait Loisirs which combines admittance to the chateau with roundtrip transportation.

A side note: If procedure is the same since my last visit, you will need to use your ticket to enter as well as exit the RER system. I saw many people, who presumably didn't save their ticket, trying to step over/around/under the RER turnstiles at the end of their journey.
Another side note: If you are riding the RER to CDG airport at the end of your vacation, be aware that two RER trains heading east share the letter B (the line splits, just like the RER-C does heading toward Versailles). You'll want the B train labeled CDG, not Mitry.
