I'm planning to be in Rome in a couple of weeks and wonder if anyone can recommend a decent, inexpensive hotel situated within walking distance of at least some of the attractions?
I'll also be a spending a night in Barcelona - same kind of thing required.
In Barcelona, we stayed at Hostals. Yes, with an A. They are small, inexpensive places to stay. More personal than a hotel or a hostel. Here is a web page that has some information that you might like: http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/hotels/barcelona-hostal.html
We also stayed at a convent - check out this TripAdvisor link http://rome-hotels.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d618019-Reviews-Suore_di_Santa_Elisabetta-Rome_Lazio.html.
It was in RS. It's near termini station and Santa Maria Maggiore. Great fun, very simple breakfast. The only time we took public transport was to the Appian Way (bus) and the Vatican (metro). Otherwise we easily walked everywhere. It's a wonderful place to wander, and since much of the art is in the churches or fountains, not all that expensive.
Hi Mitch
I'm in the same boat but later in the year so I've got some time to plan. You should consider staying in a monastery or convent. There is a good website www.monasterystays.com which has access to hundreds of place all over Italy but specifically they have a separate map of Rome when there seem to be heaps of places. The prices seem reasonable (given their fee), centrally located and safe.- what more could you ask for. Check out the site.
