My husband and I would like to go to Germany, Austria or Switzerland in December 2011. We were thinking Nuremburg for the famous Christmas Markets and a couple days in Munich, but weren't sure if we should go to Austria or Switzerland after that. Does anyone have any good recommendations? My husband would like to spend a couple days in the Alps if possible. Thanks!

Austria is much closer and less expensive than Switzerland. You can get to the beautiful Zillertal from Munich in just a couple of hours.

Another place I would recommend is around Oberstdorf in the Oberallgäu region (SW corner) of Bavaria. You can get there from Munich in about 2-1/2 hours by direct regional train (ALX). Oberstdorf is one of the largest ski areas of Germany. Usually, I think, it doesn't open as a ski area until Christmas. Adjacent to Oberstdorf is the Austrian Kleinwalsertal, a really beautiful Alpine valley, completely isolated from Austria (Vorarlberg) by the mountains.
