We flew into Germany and spent three nites in Nuemburg, then flew to Portugal. Then four nites in Tavira, three nites in Porto, and finally, four nites in Lisbon. We used the car to do day trips from Tavira and Lisbon. Use the Rick Steves Portugal book to plan your trip> It had lots of great ideas!

We spent Dec (XMass)of 2007 in Portugal, and loved it. We were walking in the surf in the Algarve, and braving the rain up North in Porto while we enjoyed Port wine tasting. We flew into Germany, met our friends, and did the XMass markets there, then hopped on a cheap Ryan Air flight to Faro Portugal, picked up a rental car, and followed all of Rick Steves "right-on-the money"advice on where to stay and what to visit in Portugal. We rented apartments in Lisbon and Tavira thru VRBO and Homelidays.com. For shorter stays (Porto) we used Rick's hotel pics. We rented a car at the airport in Porto, and returned it in Lisbon (we spend XMass in Lisbon...it was fun!). Driving in Portugal was easy; the freeways are new toll roads and had no traffic. Go to Weather Underground and check to see what the average weather is at that time of year. We were told to exspect rain in Porto, and a good chance of sun in Lisbon and the Algarve. We really enjoyed this trip. Flying "open jaw" into Germany, then home from Spain was surprsingly cheap.
We got to see part of Germany in the snow, and part of Portugal in the rain, and another part in the sun. You can also find lots of info about the lo-cost inter EU airlines on Whichbudget.com.

Rafael, as I previously stated, we rented an apt in Lisbon; and did not stay in a hotel. ( and I would not recomend the apt that we stayed in...) Use the Rick Steves book to pick a hotel that sounds good to you, then go to Trip Advisor and read the reviews that fellow travelers have posted about that hotel. The rick steves book is a must for traveling in Portugal. We also like the Lonely Planet guidebooks. As far as what type of clothes to pack for your trip, go to Weather Underground and check out the average temp for the time of year and city where you will be staying. Two days before you leave, look at the weather forecast and make the final determination on what you will pack. It was warm and sunny when we were in Lisbon and the Algarve, but that could change when you go. Bring clothes that will suit all types of weather. The best way to accomplish this is to simply add more layers of clothes when it gets colder. You are correct about the prices; the overall prices in Portugal are usually much lower than other countries in the EU. (except you have to consider the current exchange rate: ouch!) Steve PS the Portugese have a special "XMass cake" that they make and sell that time of year. Each one is a little different, and each is awesome! Try some!

You are welcome! Don't forget; the Lisbon pickpockets are some of the best: wear your money belt at all times, or "neck purse", or my favorite, and inside-the-pants wallet.
