After a week in Vienna and Salzburg, my girlfriend and I will be spending five nights in Munich (12/22-12/27). I've planned all of our Munich sightseeing for the first three days. As I've heard that many things will close down on the 25th and 26th, I was thinking that we'd use that opportunity to get out of the city. It looks like Neuschwanstein will be open on the 26th, so I think we'll make that trip then, but I'm still looking for ideas on what to do on the 25th. Perhaps visit Rothenburg? Ideally, I'd like to go somewhere where we can still have a great time even if many of the sights/museums are closed (though obviously, it would be great to have some cafes/restaurants open to escape from the cold). Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
Both of you would enjoy Neuschwanstein and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. However, I would check before hand to see if any place will be open to eat. I would think something should be open.
The day you need to really have planned is the 24th, when literally everything shuts down, except for public transportation. Do you have dinner reservations at your hotel or another hotel? The 25th and 26th, though official holidays where stores are closed, are also popular days to go out to eat in restaurants, so some may be closed, but many are open. Same with museums and other tourist attractions. Just check the websites for any places that you want to visit to see what their holiday schedule will be. There will be lots of church services with organ concerts, etc. on all 3 days. Another idea is to also make a visit to Salzburg, which will still have its' Christmas market running. http://www.christkindlmarkt.co.at/index.html
