I'm having trouble getting my brain about using a debit card in Paris. I had read somewhere that the banking numbers are not compatible and we would not be able to use the debit card, but that is what I was planning on using to withdraw cash. Am I going to have to resort to taking traveler's checks?
You will have no problems using your debit card to withdraw cash from an ATM machine. But you won't be able to use your debit card to make point-of-sale purchase at places like supermarkets, gas station, and restaurants. European debit cards are embedded with smart-chips, and the hardware the merchants use to read the cards will only accept cards with the chips. But again you will have no problems using your card at an ATM machine.
There are some important things to do BEFORE leaving home to be sure your credit cards and ATM cards will work in Europe. Read Rick's helpful article: www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/moneytip.htm.
I was able to use my debit card at restaurants and stores in France. Just had trouble at the automatic pay stations at supermarket gas pumps.
thank you all, I felt so stupid not getting my brain around that one, but really wanted to make sure before we go :)
Cathie
Cathie, a few points to add to the others. Your Debit / ATM card should work without problems in France to withdraw cash. However, it's IMPORTANT to ensure that you use a four-number PIN and also that your funds are in a Chequing account! Euro ATM's don't seem to be able to access Savings accounts?
It's also a good idea to take at least two ATM cards, in case one "malfunctions" or whatever. At least one credit card is a good idea.
I wouldn't bother with Traveller's Cheques. They're becoming somewhat cumbersome to use these days. As Rick says "I've cashed my last Traveller's Cheque".
Cheers!
