De Nieuwe Kerk - Amsterdam

Is this site worth a visit? I know they offer various art exhibits, but for the time period I will be in Amsterdam, the subject is listed as "Summer in the church" (I'm guessing this means no art exhibit). I'm trying to figure out if the iAmsterdam card is worth it for my short stay (<36 hours). De Nieuwe Kerk looks like a promising and convenient stop (and obviously, covered by the card) but I thought I'd ask for opinions (thanks!)

CL, I've walked by it probably 25 times over the years, never tempted to go in. Michelin Green Guide gives it 1 star out of a possible 3 and Rick Steve's mentions it in his book but doesn't give it any stars of a possible 3. Maybe worth it to see where the Dutch royalty get 'crowned' or if there's a special exhibit of interest when you're there, but IMO, for basically a day+ of sightseeing, too many other sights to see. That said, if you do decide to go in, and you have tha iA card, it won't take a lot of your time.

This is the main venue for Amsterdam's top temporary art exhibits. They currently have art and artifacts from the National Museum of Afghanistan. Just got back from a visit three days ago, it is amazing stuff! It indeed looks like there will be no major exhibit this summer. First time that has happened in several years. It's not worth visiting on its own. For other temporary shows check out the Hermitage (Amsterdam branch), Troppen (tropical)Museum, Amsterdam City Museum, FOAM photography museum, Stedelijk Museum and the Jewish Museum. The latter has just opened a major exhibit on the Jewish origins of American comic books; everything from Superman, Batman, Mad Magazine, to Art Crumb. You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy it:) Also if you are going to be in Amsterdam 4/29-6/23 the Odue Kerk will have the annual 2008 World Press Photo exhibit. This is the top show for photojournalism.
