Seat reservations on 80% of the DB ICE bullet train fleet have now become easier as the rail company has (finally!!) introduced graphical seat maps. Those are available on all ICE trains but ICE-2 and ICE-TD who are currently undergoing renovation and therefor a consistent seat map cannot (yet) be provided. But for all of the major routes you can now pick a seat knowing where it will be located within the wagon. Also remember that for any group consisting of 3 or more people (traveling together) a family reservation is cheaper than individual ones.

No. As long as it's not 4 business men in suit and tie anything will go through as "family"...
