We are planning our trip to southern Spain at the end of May. We would like some feedback on whether travellers believe a daytrip to Tangier is worthwhile or a waste of time. We generally don't like places that are TOO touristy and we aren't travelling to shop .Reading the guidebook has left us undecided.
Tangier has actually improved a lot in the last few years. However, it is still very touristy. Honestly, is any place full of day trippers not? I agree, Morocco is amazing and well worth your time, but if all you have is one day for Tangier, I'm not sure I would do it. I suppose if you have other spots in Spain that are interesting you, I would probably lean that direction.
On the other hand, if you never think that you will make it back to Morocco, than go for it! I did a day trip to Albania from Corfu two years ago, and while it was certainly not an in depth look at that country, i was still very pleased and happy that I spent the time to go.
Short version: Morocco is great. Tangier stinks. Go deep or skip it.
As a chance to whet your appetite for a trip in the future...sure, why not. But, as Mike says, it depends what else you have to give up for the day. If you have an extended stay in southern Spain, that'd be a good way to spend a day. Tangier really isn't "Morocco" although you do get a pass at North African life. It's been an international port and entryway for so long, that there's a heavy European overlay as well.
