We are flying out of Barcelona after coming up the coast of Italy and France. We were wondering if there were any interesting day trips from Barcelona, and if so, we would arrive a few days early. We had planned a full day and 2 nights before we fly, but have the time and if it is worth it, we could arrive a few days earlier than that. thanks for your help
We are leaving for Barcelona on Friday...the side trips we were planning on were Stiges, Girona, and maybe the high speed train to Madrid for a quick walk-around. Also thought about heading north into France but still trying to figure out which city to stop in.
Montserat is a nice place I have seen on Rick Steves video. It is about a hour from Barcelona and has a beautiful church and a winding descent downhill with candles in crevices. It is on a hill so you have beautiful views. You can also see the black Madonna and touch her orb.
Montserrat is a great day trip from Barcelona. It was a high lite of our trip to Spain in 2010. You can get there by train (we drove) and take the aerial tram up to the monastery. Excellent views - 2 funicular trains and a variety of 'trails'. We had a good lunch in the cafeteria (hate to call it that). We touched the Madonna's orb and lit a few candles. We were even lucky enough to enjoy the choir. The terrain and the views are unbelievable. Do you have a RS guidebook with you? It has all of the details for getting there and what to see.
I agree, Montserrat is a great Day trip in Barcelona. Its beautiful and very serene.
We are actually going back to BCN this May. We're only staying one day in the City and we're going to Figueres, another great Day Trip in BCN. We're staying there overnight though, then move on to France.
