Day Trips from Vienna (Unlimited time and Vorteils discount card)

Hi All,
Working as an au pair in Vienna, and looking for some day trip options for the times I just need to get out of the city! I've seen some great posts about more typical places, but would love any and all suggestions---I'm happy to travel at least three hours for some "day-tripping" options as I have a ton of time at my disposal on days "off." Also looking for off the beaten path options in Vienna as I have about five free hours mid-day, every day. :) Am a musician and passionate about literature, art history, and church architecture. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Thanks James-Durnstein sounds beautiful. I live five minutes from the Riesenrad, but haven't really explored the Prater beyond going jogging, etc. I appreciate it!

Bratislava is supposed to be nice, although I just flew into it to get to Vienna. Any suggestions anyone?

Eisenstadt (http://www.austria.info/us/culture-art/eisenstadt-1149330.html) immediately comes to mind as an easy day trip from Wien. Hayden was Prince Esterhazy's Kapellmeister (music director) for over 40 years; his tomb is in the Bergkirche (Haydenkirche), so you can combine your musical and church architecture interests (along with some good wine, as Burgenland is famous for such). In Wien, take a stroll in the Augarten or take the 'D' strassenbahn to the endstation (Nussdorf) and hike from there to the Kahlenberg for an awesome view of the city.

Have you done Budapest? It's a really neat trip, has a lot of history and lots to see. I know a couple from the states who are living in Budapest that could possibly give you some great tips if you are interested. They run a tiny B&B there. I can see if I can get an email address for ya. Andrea

Salzburg is an obvious answer as it is about 3 hrs by train from Vienna. When we lived in Vienna years ago, we always enjoyed driving to Mariazell on weekends. It is the most important pilgrimage site in Austria with its beautiful Basilica. Pope John Paul visited in 1983 as did Pope Benedict in 2007. http://www.sacred-destinations.com/austria/mariazell-shrine Closer to Vienna is Rust in Burgenland. It is known for it's wine and it's stork nests. In the summer months approx. 10 pairs breed on top of the chimneys of the old houses in Rust where they rear approximately 20 young storks. http://www.imburgenland.at/static/rust_tour/rust3en_rot/tour_RUSTen.html

Salzburg by bus - organized tours are plenty, or Bratislava - you can take a river cruise on Danube (I hope it is still working).
