We are spending 3 days in Stuttgart (one of which will be visiting the Porsche and Mercedes Benz Museums!!!). We would like to do a couple of day trips. Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.
When i was a student south of Stuttgart near Reutlingen we did trips to Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Munich. I'm not sure how the train links are these days, but I would think that this would be worth exploring. Another town that was lovely was Tubingen. Its a university town. Stuttgart is on the Neckar river and the whole Neckar valley is very nice. The Schwabisch Alp (not sure I've got the spelling right here) is beautiful with valleys and orchards. We did not get to Ulm, but it could have been that we were so focused on the bigger cities that we missed it.

Our friends that live in Stuttgart drove us to Munich for the day and we really enjoyed it. They also mentioned Ulm and if I recall, it was only about half the distance.
The town of Hechingen, home of Burg Hohenzollern" , is only about an hour south of Stuttgart. The only bus of the day from the Bahnhof to the castle leaves at 11:25, so you have to arrive on the 11:18 train from Stuttgart (lvs 10:16).
Another pleasant place to visit, not to far out of Stuttgart, is Freudenstadt, sometimes called the capital of the northern Black Forest. You take the train south to Ettingen im Gäu, then change there for the train to Freudenstadt.
And, BTW, I would also recommend Ulm - been there twice. The church tower there is the tallest Gothic church tower in the world and you can climb, via an inside staircase (narrow, spiral), to the top for a great view of the city and the alps.
I have also been to Tübingen, briefly. Didn't see the downtown or the University, but we did have a nice lunch on the porch of a restaurant alongside the Neckar.
Thank you for your replies. Have noted all your suggestions.
Judy- Sounds like you may have more than a casual interest in cars ?
Seems like your time is already pretty well booked up... but the Hockenheim race track is less than 1.5 to 2 hours away. Probably one of the most famous auto museums, the Schlumpf collection is in Mulhouse, France, but thats maybe 3 hrs each way. ( makes for a very LOOONG day trip, but it's the automotive Mother Lode)
Hi Bill My interest in cars has been borne out of necessity, having been married to a 'car nut' for 41 years, with an absolute passion for Porsche cars in particular. As they say 'If You Can't Beat them Join Them'
Judy,
Completely understand- Of course its a shame the Porsche factory tours are quite hard to get in on. Their museum is fairly small- I've not been but I know others that have.
Certainly you don't need to tell your husband theres more car things to do, it will be our secret...LOL
We are booking a tour of the factory - 6 months in advance!!! Don't worry one day of car stuff will be more than a fair compromise.
An excellent day trip from Stuttgart is a visit to the Palace of Ludwigsburg in Ludwigsburg. The extensive baroque gardens there are memorable. In addition, there are two other palaces of the former Kings of Wuerttemberg located on the grounds, Schloss Monrepos and Schloss Favorite.
I would second the Ludwigsburg Palace. It's very easy to get to from Stuttgart: just hop on the train and take a brief (less than 10 min.) walk to the palace. The tour is long (over 1 hour) and much more in-depth than you might get elsewhere, and all the furnishings are original, as it wasn't damaged during the war.
Hi Judy, I currently live in Stuttgart and would say that Ulm's Minster is one of the sights to see. You can also get to Rothenburg in about 2.5 hours.
