We are going to be in Saint Gallen Switzerland for 5 days and plan to do some days trip to Germany and Austria.
We are plannning to visit Bregenz (Austria) for a day and Konstanz (Germany) and Meersburg (Germany) for another day. I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations.
From St. Gallen on a bright and sunny day take the cable car up Mt. Säntis! Days trips: Bregenz is pretty boring, Lindau (Bavaria) is much more worthwhile. As for Austria: Visit the Montafon valley, about 45mins from Bregenz. Between Lindau and Friedrichshafen visit Wasserburg, Nonnenhorn, Langenargen (several chateaus along the coast line)... And of course the church of Birnau in the Meersburg area...
Another good place is Friedrichshafen and the Zeppelin museum. You can get to Friedrichshafen by going to Romanshorn and taking the ferry across the Bodensee. Nice boat trip, interesting museum.
Another possiblity, take the train from Lindau or Friedrichshafen to Sigmaringen (www.sigmaringen.de) and see the Hohenzollern castle there.
Our family has enjoyed the town of Appenzell on several occassions. Check it out on www.appenzell.ch Rick Steves also talks about it in his tour books. It's about 19km from St. Gallen. There is a great cheese factory that is very interesting and you can tour on your own. The town is quaint. It's also a beautiful region of Switzerland. Enjoy your trip.
