Our family is renting an apartment in Paris for 1 week this June. Any suggestions for interesting towns that we could get to on public transportation for a day trip? We don't need a big attraction. We will have our fill in Paris!
Google Chantilly, I have been , in August last year, and it was such a nice surprise because,, get this,, NO CROWDS! Smaller, more peaceful and low key then places like Versailles , but still worth the visit. Trains run from Gare Du Nord and take about 30 minutes.
Right across from Chateau is a very good Horse Musuem, and the Chantilly Stables ,, both were worth visiting, even though I am not really a " horse" person. Town is small, not much too it, but is is such a nice change from Paris.
You can walk from train station to Chateau , looks like about a 20-25 minute walk , ( not sure didn't do that myself) but I did notice the lovely walking trails( and horse trails everywhere through the Chantilly forests) . There is also a bus that will take you to Chateau but it only comes once an hour, someone said they try and coordinate that with the train arrival , but I cannot verify that.
Anyways google it to find out info, they website has an english icon you can click on.
If you go to Chantilly, you could easily include the medieval walled town of Senlis. It's a very short bus ride between the towns.
Note some further suggestions in the winter day trip from paris thread.
Not sure what you like to do. You can take the fast train to Brussels, spend most of the day and return in the evening. We did Bruges and loved it - a favorite of the trip so far. I saw some special rates offered for short and one-day visits when I booked our tickets a few weeks ago.
How about Malmaison, Josephine Bonapart's home. She kept it after their divorce. Nice little town, cute little chateau. Easy to get to by train. Chartres is an easy day trip.
