Day trips from Oberammergau, Germany?

Hello, I will be in Oberammergau and wondering what day trips are available from there? Never been over there before. Thanks.

There are bus lines going from/thru Oberammergau (leave from the bus plaza in front of the Bahnhof). One line goes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Füssen (via Hohenschangau) so you can easily go to either GaP or to the castles. From GaP you could take either a train or a bus to Mittenwald (or from there even to Innsbruck). There is also a bus line (about 15 min) from Oberammergau to Linderhof. It you go into GaP you can also pick up a bus to Walchensee or Kochelsee. You can also take the train from Oberammergau to Murnau and from there catch a train on the main line from GaP to Munich.

What about going to the Eagles Nest, day trips to Munich or Salzburg, Austria? Is this possible?

Thanks.

I think a day trip to Munich (about 1h50m one way from Oberammergau via Murnau) is a real possibility. For Eagles' Nest and/or Salzburg, I'd stay overnight. You can get back and forth in a day, but you wouldn't have enough time there to justify the length of the trip.

You don't say when you will be going, but Eagle's Nest closes around the end of October and will not open again until early May due to snow on the roads leading to the entrance.

Ray,

I'm assuming this is your first trip to Germany?

I would HIGHLY recommend picking up a copy of the "Germany 2011" Guidebook, as it will provide you with a LOT of information on sightseeing, transportation, Hotels, etc. The 2011 edition will be available on November 23rd. You can either order directly from the Travel Store here, or check larger bookstores in your area such as Chapters.

One note regarding the Eagle's Nest. As Betty mentioned, it's closed in the winter months, due to treacherous road conditions leading up to the entrance. However, depending on which time of year you'll be travelling there, you could also visit the Dokumentation Centre and Bunkers, which are just outside the village of Berchtesgaden. There's also an interesting Salt Mine tour there.

If possible, I'd suggest spending MORE than a day trip in Munich as there's LOTS to see and do there! For example, the Deutsches Museum has over 16 kM of exhibits at the main site (there are two satellite locations also) and it takes a while to wander through there. You might consider one of the Munich Walks tours, as they provide a lot of information on the history of the area.

It would also be better to spend more than part of a day in Salzburg, as there's lots to see there as well. I spent well over four hours exploring the Hohensalzburg Castle.

Cheers!
