I had to redo my plans and on my way back towards Frankfurt I was originally planning to spend 2 nights in Nurnberg but now I have an extra night and was wondering whether it would be better to spend a 3rd night there and make a day trip somewhere close by (1-2 hr or so train ride), or stay somewhere such as Wurzburg for a night?
Any other suggestions? (I just don't want to get further away than 2 or so hrs train ride from Frankfurt.). (Just for those curious, I had to redo some plans since I didn't realize hotel rooms are more difficult to get on weekends in Rothenburg/Salzburg during early December. I had thought cashing in my FF miles would have been the hard part but it wasn't.)
Let's see. Bamberg is certainly worth a visit. You already know about Rothenburg and Würzburg. A little further down the Danube is Passau. Nearer is Regensburg and Landshut. You can take the train around via Bad Bergentheim Teutonic Nights Museum) to Weikersheim. I really don't think you have enough time to see it all.
I agree with Lee about Bamberg. It's really close to Nuernberg and really picturesque and, if you're a beer drinker, it has nine breweries. Of course, Nuernberg's is probably the most famous Christmas market in Germany but Bamberg has one, too. By the way, in Nuernberg, be prepared to take home some of their famous Lebkuchen (Christmas cookies)in pretty presentation tins.
3 little sausages under the medieval bridge in Regensburg in the oldest continuously operating kitchen (built when the bridge was) overlooking the river. Can I come too?
Thanks for the suggestions. Most likely I'll stop at Bamberg since it seems interesting and convenient from Nurnberg. Thank you.
