We'll be in Honfleur for 2 nights, and Bayeux for 3 nights. We don't have a day trips planned for Honfleur, but were considering Deauville-Trouville. However, after doing some reading about Deauville-Trouville, it's starting to sound to me like a resort town for well-heeled Parisians and internationals. If all there is to see there are grand resorts and casinos, that's not really up our alley. Am I missing something? Is there a better choice for enjoyable experience?
For Bayeux, we have booked a D-Day tour and plan to visit Mont St Michel. We, of course, also plan to see the famous Bayeux tapestry. With 3 nights what other day trip recommendations does anyone have? Thanks for all help! Greg
Greg, In addition to the Bayeux Tapestry, you might want to visit the excellent WW-II Museum in Bayeux. Another possibility (if not covered by your tour) would be to visit the Gun Batteries at Longues sur Mer, which are about 15-minutes outside of Bayeux. There may be Buses out there (not sure as I had a rental car). If you want further WW-II sites, you could also visit the famous Pegasus Bridge and Museum, which are not far from Bayeux. As I recall, the Museum takes a "siesta" in the afternoon for about an hour, so plan your touring accordingly. There are three Cairns along the river, showing the location where the first three Gliders landed. It's amazing how close they came to the bridge, at night and with primitive navigation aids! There's history all over that area, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding places to tour. Which firm did you book your D-Day tour with? Cheers!
Rouen and Les Andelys make a pretty good excursion from Honfleur. About an hour or so each way, a tad more to scoot down to Les Andeleys, bur worth it. MSM is about an hour an a half from Bayeux, If you extend the day another fourty-five minutes west, you can take in St Malo and catch the menhir at Dol either coming or going. You're pretty close on Deauville-Trouville. Either you have to like the resort business, like walking around marinas, or like really big fish markters.
When we stayed in Honfluer, we enjoyed hiking the cliffs of Etretat. It was a short drive from Honfluer to these cliffs that Monet painted again & again. We also enjoyed visiting the Boudin Museum (in Honfluer) with it's great collection of native costumes & artifacts in addition to art. It's a wonderful little town. I hope you enjoy your trip.
From Honfleur, take the spectacular (fairly new) Normandy bridge over to Le Havre and drive along the north side of the Seine. There are some nice little villages like Caudebec-en-Caux. Roger
