Day trips from Fraankfurt?

Hi,
I will be based in Frankfurt for the month of October and would appreciate any ideas for day trips or short excursions. I am already planning to fly out of Hahn to western Ireland for four days as my big splurge. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Sybil

You won't be seeing much when you take the bus from Frankfurt to Hahn. It's pretty much a direct bus with a stop in Mainz.

But Mainz is a nice outing for another day. You could daytrip to one of the Rhine villages on another day - tour a castle (Marksburg in Braubach is best) and see the towns on the west bank between Boppard and Bacharach. Würzburg is a pleasant city with a superb palace - the residenz - and daytrip-worthy.

On one weekend consider an overnight trip to the Mosel by train or car via the Rhine Valley; stay in Cochem, visit nearby Burg Eltz (downstream, near Moselkern) and Trier; do Bernkastel too if time permits.

We were stationed for 3 yrs in the Frankfurt area. What we enjoyed was that it was centrally located for a lot of day/weekend trips. Of course, it depends on your transportation--car/train. Day trips we enjoyed: Heidelburg (castle), Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl (walled town), Lauterbach (by Fulda), Bacharach, Koln (Cathedral), Nancy (France--went by car), Cochem. Weekend trips: Amsterdam, Munich, Garmisch (overnight train), Berlin, Brugge (Belgium), Black Forest area (enjoyed Triberg & Freiburg). So many possibilities. Anywhere you go will be an adventure because it is all so different than what we are used to. I tend to like the small, quaint towns more than the large cities, although I love Munich. By the way, I used to go to Frankfurt's flea market on Saturday. Not sure if it still happens, but it was great! Have fun!

Wurtzburg is a reasonable train ride from Frankfurt. The Romantic Road is more than a day trip. If you have a long weekend (at least 2 full days!) then go as far as Wurtzburg to Nordlingen. It will be a long, tiring weekend, but very worth it.

Try Saarbrucken...not always on travel tips, but we have family in the area, and it's beautiful. Esp. the castle...an interesting combo of several architectural styles and ages (think original Roman wall through modern, glass/skyscraper). Also, check out the history of the path leading to the castle. Try Die Kartoffel for lunch, in the center of town. And St. George's Church (complete with bronze statuary!)

Hi Sybil,
One October weekend I had opportunity to stay at Hotel Krone in Assmannshausen, quite near Frankfurt. An easy train ride ... Rüdesheim-Assmannshausen is everything they say: quaint, historic, culinary-terrific, etc. There's no need to take a room in the Hotel Krone, but a visit to this historic place and/or restaurant is a good move. I suggest you copy and paste this link to check it out ...
