Day Trips from Burgundy

First time poster here, hoping I can get some suggestions for day trips with Burgundy- Puligny Montrachet, as our base. We have some flexibility as we will have a car. So far we know we'll be taking the train in Dijon, and we'll be in Beaune since it's only 10 minutes away from our hotel. We like Colmar or the Alsace region for sure. Also, possibly Berne or Lausanne. We don't want to drive more than 3-3.5 hours each way and would like to get out of the Burgundy region since we're already committed to Dijon, Beaune, and Puligny Montrachet. We have 4 nights/5 days. I guess my question is, is Switzerland a stretch? Any suggestions on day trips from this region? Thank you!!!! -Claire

We did both scenic drives starting from Beaune that RS has in his France guide and loved both. Especially liked the drive that included Chateauneuf-en-Auxois, and La Rochepot. I'm not sure I understand your question... is the 4 nights in addition to the time you have for Burgundy or do you have a total of 4 nights for Burgundy and somewhere else?

Sorry if I wasn't clear- we're in Paris for a week before the Burgundy part of our trip. After Paris, we have 4 nights/5 days in Burgundy total (Puligny Montrachet to be precise). So, from Burgundy, I'm trying to figure out day trips are doable with a car.

Thanks for clarifying :) 4 nights is really 3 full days. I would spend that time in Burgundy (you asked about Switzerland and places outside Burgundy). We spent 4 nights in Beaune... one of our 3 days we spent the whole day in Beaune and the other two doing the two scenic drives, which I highly recommend. We loved Burgundy, it was amazing, and wished we could have stayed there longer. Personally, I'd recommend staying in Burgundy, you won't run out of things to see and do.

I agree with Susan. Those other places are great, but love the one you're with! Are you really so eager to spend 7 hours in a car to see someplace else? I should think staying on 2 night in Burgundy and then moving on would be preferable to using it as a base to visit Europe.

Thanks Susan and Adam! I guess I'm just tempted because we'll be so close to Switzerland... Susan, I just bought the RS France 2013 book so I'll keep an eye out for those drives- thank you for the suggestion.

I totally understand the temptation, but since you are going to Burgundy I would really enjoy that area in the short time you have. It's as great an area as anyplace else, the time will go by fast, and you'll wish you had even more time there. Everyone travels differently, I've done faster paced trips (6 countries in 7 wks) and slow trips (a month or more just in Paris, many times)... I like both styles of travel. But I agree with Adam, love the one you traveled so far to see.

If you're interested in seeing early, early Gothic, you may want to consider going to Vezelay and Autun to see their incredibly important cathedrals. Also at Autun are extremely impressive Roman theatre and arches.
If you go to Vezelay, consider a quick drive East to Fontenay abbey. Cistercian. Gorgeous.

Thanks, Nancy. I read about the drive to Fontenay Abbey in the RS book- sounds like a fantastic place, hopefully we'll manage to get to it.
