I was wondering if Bern is a good home base for taking day trips to see the alps and valleys? As we have only 7 days, flying into Zurich and are spending two days in Geneva we would like a home base the will let us see the most time allows.
Any suggestions for day trips?
I would not consider Bern a good home base to see the alps. The Berner Oberland area is much better. You are actually in the alps. You might want to research Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Murren. Lauterbrunnen is a main transportation hub where you can get transport up into the mountains. We stayed there for a week and loved it. Wengen and Murren are further up in the mountains and are lovely.
You can get to these areas from Bern, but getting to Wengen or Murren is likely about a two hour trip because you will need to change trains or go from train to gondola to get to them.
Thanks for the helpful info.
Can you suggest a nice place to stay? And are three days enough? As we have limited time we want to make the best of it.
"Murren" is actually Mürren (note the ü). You can also use Muerren. Their website at www.muerren.ch will show all the hotels in town. www.murren.ch will only get you one hotel in Mürren.
Three days would not have been enough for me, but I like to stay a week most places. We just stayed the last night in Zurich and spent the rest of the time in the Bernese Oberland and Luzern areas so can't speak to Geneva. I used the myswitzerland.com website a lot when planning our trip. It has lots of hotels, apartments and extensive information about the country.
