I'm in the very beginning stages of planning an 8-9 day trip to Barcelona with mom this spring. What are suggestions for day trips and if we didn't do any day trips would 8-9 days be too long in one city?

A little long for Barcelona alone. Plan on going to Costa del sol as well.

About three hours by train from Barcelona is Collioure, France ... a lovely little French riviera village that might be fun for a couple of nights respite from the busy Barcelona.

Definitely Montserrat, we spent a few days in the Costa Brava, also in spring a few years ago. Check out Figueres, Cadeques and Girona. We stayed in a small village called l'Escala. From Barcelona
you could take an organized tour to some wineries in the penedes vallee.
